Privacy Policy for AnimeTab

Last updated: October 27, 2026

Overview

AnimeTab replaces your new tab page with anime wallpapers, a live clock, a search bar, daily quotes, quick links, and an optional airing countdown. It does not require an account and has no backend service of its own.

Data Collection

AnimeTab does not collect personal information or browsing history, and it does not send any usage data anywhere. It contains no analytics SDKs, advertising, or tracking scripts. A small set of anonymous counters (for example, how many new tabs you opened this week) is kept only on your device so you can see it in the Wallpaper Studio; it is deleted automatically after 30 days.

Search

The search bar uses Chrome's chrome.search API, so your query goes to the default search engine you chose in Chrome settings. AnimeTab does not see, store, or change your search engine, and it does not record your searches.

What Is Stored Locally

AnimeTab uses chrome.storage.local and IndexedDB on your device to remember:

• nekosWallpaperUrl, anime_bg_url, wallpaperPinnedUrl: the current or pinned wallpaper address.
• wallpaperSource, wallpaperCategory, bingPool: your wallpaper source choice and a one-day cache of photo-of-the-day addresses.
• animeThemeMode, moodTouched, clockFormat, ambientMode: your theme, clock and ambient sound preferences.
• customBackgroundEnabled, customBackgroundMime, customBackgroundRef, customBackgroundData: your own uploaded background, if you choose to add one. The file itself stays in your browser.
• quickLinksV1: your quick-link tiles.
• focusMinutes, focusSession, focusCompleteAt: your focus timer settings and current session.
• anilistAiringCache, anilistWatchlist, anilistWatchCache: cached public airing data and the shows you pinned.
• growthState: how many times you used the share buttons (for unlocking cosmetic themes).
• animetabMetrics: the local anonymous counters described above.

This data never leaves your Chrome profile.

Network Requests

AnimeTab only contacts the services below, and never sends personal data to them:

• nekos.best and wallhaven.cc: public anime wallpaper APIs. Requests to nekos.best include a User-Agent that identifies AnimeTab, as its API terms ask.
• Bing: the public photo-of-the-day archive, used only if you choose that wallpaper source.
• AniList: public airing schedule data for the Airing Soon card, and show search when you add to your watchlist.
• Google's favicon service: loads the small icon for each quick-link tile, using only the site's domain name.
• Shortcut links and share buttons open those websites only when you click them.

Permissions

• storage: saves the preferences listed above on your device.
• search: sends search-bar queries to your Chrome default search engine.
• downloads: saves a wallpaper to your computer when you click the download button.
• declarativeNetRequestWithHostAccess: sets the AnimeTab User-Agent on nekos.best wallpaper requests only.

Data Sharing

AnimeTab does not sell, rent, or share any data with third parties.

Data Removal

Stored preferences remain in your browser until you clear extension data or uninstall AnimeTab, which removes them.
